Contribution of musical education on Sustainability : the study case of "El Sistema" musical education for underprivileged children in Venezuela

Diese Arbeit reflektiert, wie musikalische Bildung mit dem Erreichen nachhaltiger Entwicklung verbunden ist. Der Diskurs über den Wert von Musik für gesellschaftliche Veränderungen wurde untersucht und dient als Grundlage dieser Untersuchung. Nach einer integrativen Literaturrecherche wurden zwei große Nachhaltigkeitsaspekte erkannt. Es wurde erkannt, dass musikalische Bildungsprogramme helfen können die sieben nachhaltigen Entwicklungsziele zu erreichen. Außerdem können diese Programme die Entwicklung von fünf Fähigkeiten beeinflussen, welche in Zusammenhang mit der Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung stehen. Außerdem wird eine Fallstudie einer prominenten Musikstiftung in Venezuela, "El Sistema", wie sie meist genannt wird, betrachtet, um die Literaturergebnisse zu bewerten. Interviews mit Studenten, Mitgliedern, Ex-Studenten und Professoren der Organisation wurden geführt. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung zeigen, dass eine orientierte musikalische Ausbildung, insbesondere ein partizipatorisches Musiklernen, wie das in El Sistema, erhebliche Auswirkungen auf verschiedene Themen wie Armut, Friedensförderung und persönliches Wohlbefinden haben kann. Darüber hinaus wird gezeigt, wie El Sistema jungen Menschen hilft, Resilienz, Reflexivität, kritisches Denken, Identitätsbildung und andere damit verbundene Fähigkeiten im Zusammenhang mit partizipativem Lernen zu entwickeln. Folglich führt diese Untersuchung zu dem Verständnis, dass orientierte musikalische Bildungsprogramme, die nicht nur Musik vermitteln, sondern auch Themen von SDGs und BNE integrieren, einen starken Einfluss auf die nachhaltige Entwicklung haben können.This thesis reflects on how musical education is linked to the attainment of sustainable development. The discourse of the value of music as useful tool for societal change is reviewed and used as the basis for this investigation. After an integrative literature review, two main aspects of sustainability were recognized. Firstly, it was found that musical education programs can help in the achievement of seven Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Secondly, that these programs can influence the development of five skills, competences and capabilities, which are within the discourse of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Furthermore, a case study of a prominent musical foundation in Venezuela, “El Sistema” as it is mostly known, is considered in order to evaluate the literature findings. Interviews with students, members, ex-students and professors of the organization were undertaken. The results of the investigation prove how oriented musical education, especially participatory music learning, like the one in El Sistema, can have a substantial impact on several issues like poverty, peace building and personal well being. Moreover, it presents how El Sistema helps youngster to develop resilience, reflexivity, critical thinking, construct their identity, and other related gained skills linked to participatory learning.
